The EDUC 400 Reading Foundations Class at Campbell University’s School of Education, was fortunate to have a guest speaker model the importance of using Literature within classroom instruction. Ms. Christine Carrington, the well- known author of SockCity, Missing Town-Missing Things, spoke about her journey in writing and publishing a book. Teacher Candidates learned techniques to integrate subjects when instructing students to read. The characters, plot and theme of this story provide an avenue to teach character traits, connecting text to self, author’s purpose and the elements of a story. Teacher Candidates plan to use this instruction in their practicum and student teaching experience.
